Pediatrician Questions Vitamins

How important are multivitamin supplements?

I am a parent with two kids one being 2 years and the other one being 4 years. I have been recommended certain multivitamin supplements by the doctor to be given to the two. However shouldn't their everyday food take care of their nutritional and vitamin requirements in the body?

Yes, if they eat a healthy variety of food.
Are they gaining weight well and eating a balanced diet. If so, these are not necessary. If they lack vegetables or dairy these could try deficiency before bone fracture.

Typically, there is not enough Vitamin D in the diet, especially for those that live in temperate climates that aren't able to get sunlight on their skin year round. Most vitamins are obtained from your children's nutrition provided they eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily. However, we have seen a lot more Vitamin D deficiency in recent years, thus the recommendation for the multivitamin. Thank you.
No they still need Multivitamins as the Vitamin D is low generally
I am a strong believer that if your child eats well, especially fruits, vegetables, and milk, he should not need a vitamin. If your children are good eaters, do not worry about giving them a vitamin.
If they eat their vegetables and have a source of calcium that almost covers it. Most children are vitamin D deficient. Unless your kids get lots of sunshine, they could probably profit from a supplement. The more sunshine they get, the more concern their is about skin problems.
