Geriatrician Questions Depression

Is depression common among elders?

My grandmother has had panic attacks lately and I'm worried about her. She's 72. Is depression common among elder people as her state can lead to that?

Yes, depression is a geriatric syndrome and is very common. It can be easily treated in most cases with SSRIs (Sertraline or Citalopram...)
Depression is common especially as one moves from community settings to hospitals to longterm care. Late-life depression is certainly treatable but tends to be more brittle, requiring close monitoring.
