The post operative pain management has significantly improved by anesthesiologists over the past few years. A lot depends on her history of pain management before surgery - most people do very well after Surgery and promptly begin to wean off narcotics.
Knee replacement is a major surgery, and discomfort is involved during the rehabilitation process. The patient should be prepared to manage the discomfort and to achieve the rehab goals under the guidance of their surgeon. Multimodal pain management protocols have dramatically improved pain after knee replacement surgery so that patients can walk day of surgery and be home the day after surgery, or even the same day as surgery in some cases.
