Is obsessing over the risk of infection a psychological problem?

My wife is extremely paranoid about risk of infections for our little one. She overdoes this obsession and I am now beginning to wonder if it is normal or not. I don't want her to shelter our toddler.

If severe and interferes with her life, it is possible the symptom is of OCD.
Excessive fear of infection is a significant psychological problem. Counseling would be a good choice.
It could be. The fact that you are worried is enough to question her behavior. I don’t know enough about your situation. Most first time mothers overdo fears about their child. If your child has had some major health problems, it may be justified. I would talk it over with the baby’s doctor and get their input.

Good luck.
Worry about infection can be still a normal concern. However, if the worrying is excessive to the point of carrying out extraordinary means of caution (beyond typical hand washing routines and typical hygiene practice), then this has to be evaluated by a clinician - a psychologist/therapist or psychiatrist. The underlying fears of your wife can be uncovered through a good counseling session with a qualified clinician.
It depends. I think a full evaluation should take part. However, if there is no reason for her worry because your child is healthy, then psychotherapy can help her control it.
