Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Specialist Questions Folic Acid

What does taking folic acid prevent?

I've been taking folic acid throughout my pregnancy because my OB-GYN said it's a necessity for my baby's develop. I currently taking it daily. What exactly are the benefits of taking folic acid for my baby? What does it prevent?

It prevents structural deformities/developmental abnormalities of lower spine and spinal cord.
It helps prevent neural tube defects, i.e., large defects in the brain and spinal cord, and some defect of the heart.
Decreases the risk your baby will be born with Spina Bifida. Ideally, you would already be on folate/prenatal vitamins BEFORE getting pregnant to have maximum benefit, but starting it after getting pregnant is also beneficial.
