Throat culture antibiotics
Gargal daily at bed time with listrin
So sorry he acquired this common illness, but know that symptom relief is doable with peppermint lozenges or Hall's (sore throat) lozenges. If agreeable to learning a new talent, you can teach gargling with warm salt water (1 tsp salt/ 1 cup water), and encourage him to do that 3 - 4 times throughout the day as this soothes plus washes the inflamed area.

Tylenol - dosed for his age - is helpful too. If he has fever, an inflamed palate, and a white coating on his tonsils, have his pediatrician exclude strep throat (bacterial infection) by a throat swab culture. It is important that antibiotics be used for strep as untreated in some patients it can progress to systemic illness affecting the heart.

Most of the time sore throat is caused by a common cold virus which resolves on its own. Both the viral and bacterial sore throat will make the child feel "bad". Allergies with post nasal drip can irritate the throat, but the child does not feel ill.

Good luck and hope this was helpful.

Give lots of liquids and tylenol if there is fever. Get a strep test to rule out strep tonsillitis in which case patient needs penicillin antibiotic.
You can use cloroseptic throat spray, throat lozengers , or mix 1/2 maalox and 1/2 benadryl liquid and give 7.5 ml every 4 hours if throat is hurting. If pain persists or fever he needs to be checked for strep throat.
