Audiologist Questions Hearing loss

Why does hearing loss happen as you age?

My grandmother is 69 years old and her hearing is just getting worse and worse. She has a hearing test next week to see if she needs a hearing aid. I know this is a common problem among older people. But why does this happen?

Age-related hearing loss is caused by degeneration of sensory cells. It cannot, unfortunately, be reversed. However, it can be treated effectively with hearing aids and other communication devices.
