Why is my 16 year old always sleeping?

My 16 year old son sleeps all the time, even on the weekends. Is this normal? Why is my 16 year old always sleeping?

Sometimes, as adults it would be nice to get the sleep he does. He is likely in a grow spurt and needs his sleep. Remember we grow when we are sleeping, so help support his grow and allow him to sleep. Unless you don’t want him to be tall and strong, then just wake him up.

I recall my parents would wake me up all the Time. Hence, I’m shorter than my brother whom slept all the time, like your son.

Hope that helps.
Does he have depression or another medical condition or is he sleep deprived or have a sleep disorder? This should be evaluated by a qualified professional.

This should be investigated. If the general health is good, one should look into narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, etc. Sleep studies may help to resolve this. Some kids are just long sleepers - more than 10 hours is normal for them.
