BRCA Gene May Predict Drug Resistance in Ovarian Cancer, Study Finds
New findings went against previous knowledge about BRCA-positive cancer
Surprisingly, the recent study’s findings suggest some BRCA-positive cancer patients did not undergo the infamous “loss of heterozygosity”.
The research team was surprised that their results did not support the widely accepted double-hit hypothesis. Most of their patients in the study never underwent this double-hit. They retained one normal BRCA gene yet still developed cancer. Furthermore, the patients who didn’t undergo loss of heterozygosity also had quite distinctive tumor characteristics.
