Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Nathan Steinle, who serves the Santa Barbara area at California Retina Consultants and at several local hospitals. Dr. Steinle earned his medical degree from Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Dr. Steinle conducted his surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at the renowned Cleveland Clinic. While at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Steinle worked closely with Dr. Daniel F. Martin, who is one of the world’s leading experts in ophthalmic research including the groundbreaking Comparison of Age Related Macular Degeneration Treatment Trials. During his surgical training Dr. Steinle earned multiple awards for excellence. He was given the honor of being named Chief Resident in addition to earning the prestigious Wirtschafter award recognizing the best resident teacher. In conjunction with his practice at California Retina Consultants, Dr. Steinle is affiliated with several local hospitals, including Community Memorial Hospital and French Hospital Medical Center. To stay current in his field, Dr. Steinle maintains professional memberships with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Steinle has been an investigator in a number of clinical research trials including the investigation of novel therapies for neovascular age related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and diabetic retinopathy. Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eyeball and orbit. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye disease. Eye surgery, also known as ocular surgery, is surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa by an ophthalmologist.The eye is a fragile organ, and requires extreme care before, during, and after a surgical procedure.
