Yes, you may be predisposed to having hammertoes due to your mother, but often, they can be treated conservatively if treatment starts early before a rigid contraction occurs. Usually, it can be splinted with a "Budin" splint to help control the contracture. An X-ray and full evaluation is needed to see where the deformity is in its progress, but surgery isn't the only available option.
