Which brain disorders are women at higher risk for?

Women have a higher risk for diseases like Alzheimer’s dementia, depression, and anxiety.

Alzheimer’s affects over 5.5 million people in the United States, and two-thirds of this huge population is female. A recent report found that after turning 60, a woman’s chance of getting Alzheimer’s is twice the risk of getting breast cancer.

Mood disorders such as depression and anxiety are much more common in women. After puberty, women are twice as likely as men to get clinically depressed or anxious during their lifetime. When it happens, it also tends to happen for women at a younger age than men.
