Type 2 diabetes has become the most common form of diabetes out there, particularly in North America.  In the U.S. alone, 29.1 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and it’s estimated that as many as 95 percent of those cases are type 2. Another staggering number is the 8.1 million people who may either be undiagnosed or completely unaware that they have a blood sugar issue.

Anyone whose diet is out of control, is overweight, or who perhaps indulges in too much sugar can develop the disorder, regardless of age, gender, or economic standing.  Even celebrities can and do develop diabetes. For years, comedian Drew Carey battled not only his weight but also type 2 diabetes and other weight-related medical issues.

Understanding type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is when the body isn’t able to use the insulin that is released through the pancreas. In a healthy person, the insulin that is released into the body uses high levels of sugar in the blood and either turns it into energy or fat. Someone with type 2 diabetes isn’t able to turn those sugars into energy and therefore it builds-up in the bloodstream.

High levels of sugar in the bloodstream are never a good thing.

Typically type 2 diabetes is developed in adulthood, usually as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle and a diet that is high in sugar and fat.  There has, however, been a significant increase in the number of kids who develop type 2 diabetes, which is alarming.

Depending on the severity of the diabetes, medication and insulin are often used to manage the blood sugar levels in the bloodstream. There is another way to treat and manage blood sugar levels and that is through diet and exercise. Losing weight and embracing a well-balanced diet is by far one of the most effective ways to treat and even ‘cure’ type 2 diabetes.

No one knows this better than Carey himself. In 2016, Carey made headlines after showcasing a much slimmer physique: 100 pounds slimmer.  Today he is not only thinner but also healthier and happier.  However, losing weight and gaining control of his diabetes was not without its challenges. It took Carey a few tries before it finally stuck.
