Research Questions Link Between Thyroid Disorders and Type 2 Diabetes

Hypothyroidism is characterized by metabolic slow down

Hypothyroidism is much more common, accounting for more than 80% of thyroid problems. Metabolic slow down results in weight gain, dry skin, low heart rate, and some may have low blood pressure. A person may also suffer from chronic fatigue and the risk of developing depression is elevated.

Common disorders and reasons that lead to hypothyroidism are iodine deficit, autoimmune disease (like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), radiation treatment, and surgical removal. In rare cases, it may be caused by some medications.
