As of today, lupus remains incurable, but an arsenal of effective and safe treatments is available for all patients. Some of the main focus of current efforts in research are the environmental factors that trigger the disease and stem cells.
It has been shown by several studies that flares in lupus are triggered by environmental factors such as exposure to UV light and silica dust, smoking, infections, and ionizing radiation. It is still not known why certain environmental exposures trigger a lupus flare, but efforts in understanding their contribution seem to aid in their prevention. However, it is for the same reason that the area is understudied.
