Research teams are now at the point of clinical trials, focusing on the pluripotent stem that is derived from dopamine neurons. This shows that a stem-cell treatment for Parkinson's disease patients is coming to reality. Dopamine neuronal treatment replacement therapies aim to fulfill the shortcomings of the current treatment.
Proof of principle studies supporting this therapeutic strategy have used fetal brain tissue and have shown to have significant improvement in the quality of life and survival. However, these transplants have not worked as anticipated as they generate side effects such as graft-induced dyskinesia (this is dyskinesia as a result of surgical procedure ).
