The Importance of Maintaining CPAP Settings

How is it adjusted?

The air pressure is adjusted based on:

  • The amount of snoring that the patient is doing
  • The REM sleep cycle. Sleep apnea will often cause the patient to not get enough REM sleep, which is the only kind of sleep the body will truly be resting.
  • Rapid eye movement. This indicates that the patient is in a deep sleep and possibly dreaming which only happens in a REM state

Based on the information that is gathered by the technologist during the slumber party, the patient should leave in the morning with an accurate air pressure to have their CPAP machine set at.
