Tips for Parenting with Multiple Sclerosis

Keep open communication

Keep open communication

There will be times when MS flares up unexpectedly, and it is more important in these times to communicate with those around you. Attempting to hide flare-ups and sticking to the original plan can have consequences in the days to follow. If you have to cancel any plans, allow your kids to be disappointed, and let them know how disappointed you are too. Letting them know how important the outing is to you will create an understanding that you want to spend time with them doing what they enjoy, and missing out on it in that moment won’t be as difficult.

Communication is something that parents struggle with in general with their children, but failing to communicate MS related needs has a steeper and more immediate consequence. By being as open and communicative as possible regarding the disease, you may find that it actually benefits your relationship with your children in ways that other parents struggle with.
