Orgaran

1 What is Orgaran?

Brand: Orgaran

Generic: Danaparoid

Orgaran, an anticoagulant, is used for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prevention after major abdominal, thoracic, and orthopaedic surgery.

Patients with non-haemorrhagic stroke can also receive danaparoid. This medicine is indicated for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia treatment and prevention.

Danaparoid may also be used for other conditions as determined by your physician. It is a prescription medication. However, on August 14, 2002, Orgaran was discontinued. Danaparoid is sold as a solution.

2 What to Know Before Using

Before using Orgaran, you must know all about the risks and complications associated with it. If you’ve had hypersensitivity reactions to danaparoid or any of its components, you should not receive this medicine.

You also need to tell your physician if you have allergies to food, preservatives, dyes, animals, and other medications. The effects of danaparoid have only been studied in adult patients.

There is little information available regarding the use of danaparoid in pediatric patients. The same goes for the elderly population. How danaparoid works in geriatric patients has not been studied.

Danaparoid has a pregnancy category of B and should be used with caution in pregnant women. It is not clearly known if danaparoid can be passed through breast milk. If you are lactating, you need to consider the pros and cons before using danaparoid.

Concomitant use of the following is normally not recommended but can be necessary:

You should also avoid ginger, vitamin A supplements, and avocado. Give your doctor a complete list of your medications.

This medicine can also influence other medical conditions including bleeding problems, heart infection, hypertension, kidney disease, active gastrointestinal ulcers, and stroke.

You should also inform your physician if you’ve had thrombocytopenia related to danaparoid use. Tell your doctor if you’ve recently undergone any surgery.

3 Proper Usage

If you need to use Orgaran at home, your healthcare provider will demonstrate how to administer it properly. You need to follow the instructions and consult your physician if you encounter any difficulty.

Do not hesitate to ask questions. Used syringes should be thrown into a puncture-proof container. Dose and timing depend on your medical condition.

But generally, for DVT prophylaxis, adults may be prescribed 750 anti-factor Xa units subcutaneously twice a day for 14 days post-op. Administer a missed dose immediately.

However, skip it if it’s almost time for the next dose. Keep your medication in a safe place where kids cannot reach it. Discard outdated medicines.

You should also throw away medications that have changed in appearance. You should not expose danaparoid to direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures.

4 Precautions to Take

There are a number of precautions you need to take while on Orgaran treatment. You should inform your other doctors including your dentist that you are currently on this medication.

You should always keep your follow-up appointments so that your condition is properly monitored and side effects can be prevented.

Inform your treating physician right away if you have to bruise or bleeding, black/tarry stools, or faintness.
