The Real Origins of These 20 Strange Phobias

Alliumphobia: Fear of garlic

This one will probably make you think of vampires, but surprisingly, they aren't the only ones with a deathly fear of garlic.

Alliumphobes do not want to be anywhere near garlic (they would not like it in a box, they would not like it with a fox). Ok, ok, jokes aside - they really don't want garlic in their lives, much less in their food.

They will avoid people who are cooking with garlic because they despise the smell, and will even avoid the entire aisle in the grocery store. So, needless to say, you won't catch them munching on garlic bread.

The fear arises for some from despising the smell, and being intensely fearful of having "garlic breath." Others are disturbed by the shape.

Some people believe that garlic has mystical power and is capable of warding off evil spirits, which could be involved in the fear for certain alliumphobes.
