Despite information now being readily available at the push of a button, many of us are still unaware of how progressive diseases work. As a result, we classify people living with chronic illnesses into absolute categories that involve being bound to wheelchairs and unable to independently carry out activities of daily living. This is not true all the time for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and all other chronic diseases as they do not affect everyone in a single definitive manner. Some DMD patients do not even show physical symptoms of the disease but are affected in other ways not immediately seen.
Every DMD patient has a different story and journey. Destroying stereotypes is one way for us to help them in their battle as it gives them back the safe feeling of normalcy, something that their illness slowly takes away from them one muscle at a time.
