OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions Doctor

BP question?

My BP this morning was 222/106. I am taking seasonqiue (birth control) and I took 4-200mg of ibuprofen before my bp was read. Could either or both of these be the cause of this high reading?

First, make sure the BP reading is accurate. BP that high requires medical evaluation by an MD. A top number more than 180 or bottom number more than 120 can damage blood vessels and cause organ damage - stroke or heart attack. Birth control pills should not be taken if your BP is elevated. Both birth control pills and ibuprofen may cause high BP even with no prior history of hypertension.
An elevated BP that high is considered a hypertensive emergency and you should be evaluated at your nearest ER. Uncontrolled BP is also a contraindication to taking the birth control seasonique you mentioned. You should really see a doctor today and closely monitor your BP.
You should seek care immediately for a BP that high, that is incredibly high and can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.
If your primary provider that prescribes your high blood pressure medication cannot see you today you should go to an urgent care or ER. The seasonique is not likely the only cause of the high BP, but in general birth control pills should not be used with uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Yes, maybe, if you started your pills recently and this is a change after that. Stop your birth control pills. See your primary care physician for BP recheck and follow up. Also follow up with your OBGyn to get progesterone only contraception options.
Take care!
