Emergency Physician Questions Constipation

Constipation problem

I have had constipation for 2 weeks now. The first week I passed very little to none. The stools were pebble like. I took a laxative for 3 days at the end of that week and had diarrhea, of sorts. Lots of liquid but just little bits of solid stool. Went to new family care doc. Nurse practitioner said take both milk of magnesia and a suppository. If still no change should I go to emergency room in 48 hrs. I have no pain. I just feel a pain in my lower left side and I'm uncomfortable in general. Is it enough to take both medications once a day as directions say on boxes? Not sure what to do now nor hoe long I should wait. Is there a doc I can see for this ongoing constipation problem and if the constipation continues should I go to the emergency room?

It's quite rare to need to go to the ER for constipation. This is only needed if there is significant pain or distension. Otherwise, use one or both of the over the counter laxatives daily. You can see a GI doctor for work up or prescription laxatives, if needed.
See a GI specialist.
