How long do teeth hurt after deep cleaning?

I had a deep cleaning 4 days ago. My teeth still hurt. Is it normal? What should I do?

Teeth can hurt for a few weeks after a deep, therapeutic cleaning. It all depends on the depth of your pockets and the expertise of your hygienist. The deeper your pockets (over 5mm), the more discomfort is likely. A quality hygienist is invaluable to patient comfort.

Difficult question to answer. The discomfort level usually coincides with extent of the treatment. In addition, everyone has a different pain tolerance. Be patient while healing, continue with good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing). Warm salt water rinses, Motrin or Tylenol for pain control, and a fluoride rinse can decrease cold sensitivity due to exposure of root surfaces that were covered by the calculus prior to the scaling and root planning (deep scaling).
