Hello,

You are asking if radiation therapy is effective for colon cancer. This is a very general question and the answer depends on more information.

Radiation therapy is used for at least three reasons. One is to treat the cancer when it is diagnosed. The second is to reduce the chance of a cancer recurrence following surgical resection, and the third is to treat symptoms due to the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.

So it is not possible to decide on a clear answer to your question.

Colon cancer is usually found as a result of a biopsy performed as a portion of a colonoscopy. Often it it found on the tissue resected as a polypectomy. The usual treatment is surgery with lymph node sampling. Based on these results chemotherapy may be recommended to decrease the chances of recurrence of the cancer.

So unless the cancer has recurred, radiation therapy is not usually recommended in the treatment approach for this illness.

It might be best to ask your doctor for a thorough explanation of the recommendations.

Good luck.
Usually it is only employed in specific situations as most of the colon is located in the abdominal cavity, which means the target would be the entire abdomen, but sometimes the lesion is localized to the retroperitoneum or closer to the back. Please talk to your doctor.
Yes, but it is limited to rectal cancer. Radiation is not used when the cancer involves a different part of the colon.
