Retainer not fitting properly?

I was given my retainers yesterday and placed them in overnight as guided by my dentist. However, the back of my retainer doesn’t quite fit and it is very loose also there are mangers gaps between my teeth and the retainer. I’ve tried pushing my retainer down to get rid of the gaps but it just doesn’t go down any further. I’ve also experienced a lot of pain and noticed my teeth have become a lot more sensitive. Is this normal?

It should be seen by the dentist who is doing the Ortho, retainers are very important, without them you will have all your teeth shift back .
I would suggest you see your dentist as he or she may need to re-fit you for another one if it can't be adjusted.
