Psychiatrist Questions Psychologist

Uncontrolled self-harm without the intent to hurt myself?

Ever since I was a young child/had memories, I would chew on my fingers and nails, then eat them. I also rip out the hair on my head/body and pick scabs/other parts of my skin. My mom told me that she was sober when she was pregnant with me stating "i never even smoked". It just makes me question my actions because I'm 20 now, and I still do this, but most people if they even ever have these habits tend to stop doing them before they are teens generally I think. Why do I act this way?

Good afternoon, Did you go through something when you were little?
I suggest that you speak with your PCP about this matter and seek a referral for further studies.
Your behaviors are ways you use to manage all the uncomfortable emotions you experience. Psychotherapy and appropriate medications could help you grapple with these emotions and function with less anxiety and depression.
