What happens if you leave the lidocaine patch on too long?

I am a 22 year old male. I want to know what happens if you leave the lidocaine patch on too long?

Once the drug is absorbed, it does not matter.
The patches are designed with a finite amount of lidocaine inside them. After the prescribed period, some residual lidocaine may still be transferred and you might get some skin irritation from the patch adhering to your skin if you are susceptible.
It will run out of medicine. You would also be more likely to have a skin reaction or irritation.
