The turbinates are structures inside the nose which warm and humidify the air as it passes by. They can also get enlarged and block the airway. When the turbinates are surgically removed, some people experience cold, dry air getting to the back of the throat without being warmed humidified. This discomfort is what is called empty nose syndrome.
