Why do chiropractors recommend ice?

I am a 33 year old female. I want to know why do chiropractors recommend ice?

Ice is an effective method for reducing pain caused by swollen tissues. It is like taking an ibuprofen but having it only work right where you want it and without any of the the side effects. Ice is typically recommended for bursitis, tendonitis, fascitis, or any acute injury because it is cheap, safe, and effective.

If you try ice and feel temporarily worse that might mean your pain is coming from a muscle spasm or pinched nerve.
Ice is commonly recommended in the acute phase (first 72 hours) of an injury as a way to decrease swelling and numb pain.
Ice is used to reduce inflammation. Inflammation is biologically associated with pain stimulating factors within the body chemistry. When ice is applied to an area, it helps reduce pain and swelling:)
Typically ice is recommended depending on site, severity and how long ago the injury happened. Ice is usually recommended because of what it does to the tissues surrounding the injury. Ice is a great way to naturally reduce swelling and excess fluid out of the injury site.
Ice decreases inflammation. It should be used during an acute flair up to help draw fluid and edema away from the injury, for around 20 - 30 minutes.
Ice is good for an acute injury to reduce the inflammation.
Decrease inflammation and pain.
Ice is a wonderful anti inflammatory. I can’t speak for anyone else but I recommend ice more than heat.
Ice is used to numb an area and reduce/control inflammation with a newer injury or initial treatment.
Ice is often used to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain depending on the condition. Chiropractors use ice and cryotherapy for a multitude of conditions, however, the most common are the ones listed previously.
Hope this answers your question, and if not, please let me know!

Sincerely,

Ice is recommended because it inhibits the swelling by vasoconstriction of the blood vessels. This prevents inflammatory cells from being dropped off at the site of the injury. Although these cells are effective in healing the injury, they also cause swelling and pain to the patient. Ice also helps relieve pain by increasing nervous input to the brain and therefore down regulating your body’s perception of pain in the brain through “pain gating”.
Because it reduces inflammation. Pain causes inflammation, and inflammation causes more pain. The ice helps reduce inflammation and breaks that cycle.

If there is swelling and if there is pain.
Hi and thanks for the question! Sometimes the joints and surrounding tissues are going through a stage of healing which if using ice, can help speed up the process. The healing is due to the adjustment breaking up the micro-adhesions around the joint and the muscle attachments. This is common when the tissues haven't been given the degrees of freedom needed over an extended period of time. It's a good way to reduce any swelling to the area, allowing better movement/use.

Sincerely,

Ice is recommended by chiropractors for the purpose of decreasing edema (swelling). When an injury occurs, the body's natural response in many cases is to release chemicals that cause swelling at the site of the injury. The swelling is a protective mechanism of the body to limit motion or further damage to the area. After a chiropractic adjustment, ice can be used to decrease the pain and swelling to the area so that the healing process can continue.
Generally, ice is the better choice for injuries and inflammation. The cold restricts blood flow and reduces swelling and inflammation. So any time there's bleeding in the underlying tissues, like sprains, strains, or bruising, grab the ice.
Ice is a natural anti-inflammatory and a mild analgesic.
Ice is commonly used to decrease inflammation and swelling, usually used after acute injuries.
Ice is a very safe and effective way to reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling.
