Anesthesiologist Questions General Anesthesia

Why won't my grandmother wake up from her anesthesia?

My 92 year old grandmother had surgery the other day, and has still not fully woken up from the anesthesia. What is going on?

Elderly people could take more time to wake up from anesthesia. But if it goes more than 24-48 hours, a CVA should be considered.
Without more information, it’s difficult to say. However, at that age, just being hospitalized for any reason can significantly impact mental status. Add to the injury or illness medications, opioids, anesthesia, the stress of surgery, etc., and sometimes the elderly patient is just never the same. There are so many factors that play into this equation with an elderly person. I’m sorry to hear this, and hope she comes around. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.
