Dentist Questions Tooth Abscess

Antibiotics aren't working for tooth abscess?

My dentist gave me antibiotics for my tooth abscess, but after taking them for a few days, they aren't working for me at all. What do I do?

Usually antibiotics treat the symptoms of the infection: swelling, discomfort, etc. But definitive treatment is the ultimate cure. It's like having a splinter under your skin. You can take antibiotics to decrease symptoms, but removing the splinter is the cure. Most of the time, taking antibiotics will not cure the problem, just relieve the worst symptoms.
Go back to your dentist so he can change your antibiotic.
Hmm, the antibiotics will not resolve a tooth abscess. Might prevent it from spreading but will not get rid of it. You need to remove all the dead infected goo inside of the tooth by either having a root canal or having it extracted. Best to treat the abscess while taking the antibiotics so get on it as soon as possible.

Ask him to give you a stronger antibiotic and get to see the dentist as soon as possible. Also, do some warm salt water rinses and warm compresses to the affected side of the face.
