There are 2 types of atrial septal defect (ASD). During in utero, we need ASD. ASD usually will close after birth. The kind of ASD which persists and becomes significant requires surgery (or patch) to repair it.
Atrial septal defect is a hole in the heart.Yes it can be fixed by catheter based procedure or surgery.

Yes, either with open heart surgery or a catheter device (minmally invasive). If it is just a small ASD and you are not planning to be a professional diver it may be OK to leave it alone.
Can be closed with surgery or with catheters depending on its location and configuration.
ASDs can be surgically cured, and also cured with non-surgical approaches. That said, most small ASDs require no intervention. Finding a structural heart specialist is your best bet.
