Pathologist Questions Creatinine

Can creatinine fluctuate between morning and night?

My mother has been admitted for CKD and her creatinine levels are fluctuating between morning and night. Is this normal?

Urea as well as creatinine are distributed throughout the total body water. In serum, the concentration of creatinine is a function of the constant production and excretion rates. It may be slightly higher at night than in the morning. Thank you.
How much fluctuations are you talking about? Laboratories do have a range of variability. Tests are done in labs to make sure this variability does not clinically affect patient results. If the variability is >0.5, then I think the lab needs to look into it and the doctor needs to be alerted.

Wide fluctuations of the creatinine levels between morning and night are not normal. The levels are influenced by many factors including medications, treatments, diet, underlying disease and most of all the status of the renal function.
