If you can be extremely fastidious and pick all the nits from the head or even shave the hair off, the lice will have nothing to attach themselves to and picking the nits off removes all the eggs while one manually removes any live lice from the hair
Usually not. It can be spread to others. Sometimes dandruff can be mistaken for nits, the eggs of lice.
