Why does my daughter have a habit of keeping in her urine?

My daughter is 4 years old and tends to resist passing urine. She always waits until the last second to go. This often leads to accidents. I also hate to know that she is uncomfortable! What could be the reason for her resisting to urinate when she needs to?

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. There are several reasons why she may be resisting to urinate/having accidents.
1) It is possible that it is painful when she is passing urine making her reluctant to use the bathroom until "the last second." The presence of any superficial abrasions in the vaginal area can cause irritation/pain when urine touches these surfaces. These abrasions are common in this age group, especially since children can sometimes unknowingly use too much force when wiping after urinating.
2). She may have a urinary tract infection (UTI), which can making urinating very painful. UTI also can cause increased frequency of urination and urinary incontinence.
3). Another common reason for increased urination is constipation. As stool builds up, the mass of the stool in the bowels can press down on the urinary bladder, thereby causing the sensation of having to use the bathroom even if there is very little urine in the bladder. This usually manifests as a child who frequently complains of having to use the bathroom but only passes a little urine when s/he actually goes.
These are just some of the reasons why your child may be having these symptoms. To be certain, I would recommend that you take your child to her primary care doctor for a more thorough evaluation. Hope this helps!
Lots of kids do this and usually it's normal. Only a problem is in girls who develop urinary infections. Most children who do this as toddlers suddenly realize that controlling eliminations is something that they are actually able to control for themselves. So, children who like to control their surroundings also usually like to control when they want to urinate.
