Why is diabetes causing weight loss in my husband?

My husband is diabetic for the last 5 years and his HbA1C level is about 8.5. He has also lost a lot of weight, and he continues to lose weight. Why is this happening?

Very high blood sugar levels can cause weight loss - as well as excessive urination and hunger. You should consult your physician to carefully evaluate this weight loss, because there are many other important causes of weight loss.
There are many reasons your husband may be loosing weight and you should discuss this with your primary.  If his HBaic is 8 or greater he is not holding on to all of the calories he is eating.  The kidney will try and get rid of or spill the glucose out.  In some diabetes this is a reason to lose weight.
His physician has to determine that he does not have another disease. Also, it is possible that his type 2 diabetes is becoming type 1, in which case he would lose weight if it is not under good control.
I would check for another disease aside from his diabetes.
If he was overweight before, then the weight loss is good. Overweight causes insulin resistance and high blood sugar. Weight loss improves this. If he was not overweight before, then the weight loss could be due to many things and needs to receive a work up for proper diagnosis. As to his diabetes, though, an HbA1c of 8.5 is much too high. It should be less than 7 or even 6.4%. That needs working on. See your physician and get a thorough exam of these problems that are probably related. Don't delay and get the diabetes under control NOW!
