Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Questions Jaw Surgery

Do they use jaw surgery to fix a broken jaw?

My friend is 28 year old, and he broke his jaw and is in the hospital. I'm not sure of the exact details. But how will they fix it? Do they use jaw surgery to fix a broken jaw?

He should have a board certified OMFS treat his fractures. The most conservative treatment would be wiring his teeth together for 6 weeks, but sometimes surgery is necessary with placement of bone plates and/or screws to stabilize the fracture.
Yes, this is our specialty as an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon, we will use different technique to fix a broken jaw, depends on the severity of the injury. We can use metal plate, or wire, or screw, and or the combination of those appliances.
It really depends on the bite and the extent of the injury. If you can re-establish the bite with “wiring the jaw” then that’s what you do.
Sometimes you have to do surgery and place plates and screws to get the bite just right.
