Gastroenterologist Questions Antibiotics

Does heavy antibiotic-use damage the intestine?

I had to take several strong courses of antibiotics over the last 2 years, for various problems. Now I'm diagnosed with irritable bowel disorder. Is it possible that this is the result of damage from all the antibiotics?

No, IBS is not caused by antibiotics. IBS sometimes is caused by infection such as food poisoning or traveler's diarrhea.
Sometimes irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can start after infections and stressful situations.
Antibiotics can damage the normal microbial balance of the body and can lead to symptoms similar to IBS.
