A video is worth a thousand words. I know this video is old, but it covers everything about cleaning and taking care of your braces and still applies today.

You need to look carefully at your teeth when brushing with braces and take your time. Brush for a full two minutes using a time. Spend 30 seconds on each of the 4 quadrants of your mouth and brush around the braces and along the gum line from every angle. Supplementing with an antibacterial mouthwash is helpful. Also, I recommend using a fluoride rinse every night before bed after brushing
One of the best ways to brush your teeth with braces is to use a Waterpik, which sprays a stream of water from a hand held wand to your braces and removes all of the food and plaque trapped on your braces and teeth. It even cleans in between the teeth, just like floss. Also, an electric toothbrush like Sonicare or Oral-B, are great for brushing braces and teeth and have special brushes for braces. Your orthodontist may provide one or more of these products. If you are going to brush your teeth manually, use a soft bristle orthodontic toothbrush, a proxy brush, and a Platypus flosser to keep your teeth and braces clean. Brush and floss after every meal and do thorough job around each bracket. Braces are a great food trap and you want to remove the food as soon as possible, to remove any acids from the food or plaque, which will decalcify your teeth and cause staining and/or cavities. A minimum of 2 minutes to brush your braces and teeth, with attention to detail will keep your teeth healthy during your orthodontic treatment.
Good luck, and keep those braces and teeth clean.

You should receive proper oral hygiene instructions when you have your braces put on. There are special orthodontic toothbrushes you can purchase that are designed to remove plaque and food stuff from around the wings of the brackets more efficiently than traditional toothbrushes. If you use a traditional tooth brush, be sure to angle the bristles so that they will clean above and below the wings of the brackets. Also, be sure to purchase a water pik to clean away any plaque and food stuff that the toothbrush and floss miss.

You brush all your teeth like normal. If the gum hurts or bleeds you may want to not brush it as hard.
