Infectious Disease Specialist Questions HIV/AIDS

How is HIV treated?

My cousin was diagnosed with HIV after having unprotected sex 3 years ago. Now, he seems to be managing it well with no complications that I know of. What's the treatment of HIV like?

Thank you for the question! Certainly HIV is a very manageable disease now and it can certainly be controlled with medications. The biggest issue we still have is people that either do not know they have HIV or they do not take their medications as recommended. The treatment itself is many times a 1 or 2 pill regimen that combines the medications together. It is well tolerated and very safe.
