Pretty serious.
Atrial fibrillation is more common in older adults than in adolescents. It is serious but can be managed and sometimes cured with a catheter procedure. It is important to see a cardiologist to see if there is a reason for the arrhythmia. This can be treated with medication. Sometimes a catheter procedure (electrophysiology study) is recommended and that can be an opportunity to treat the rhythm during the procedure to eliminate the arrhythmia. Electrophysiologists are cardiologist specifically trained in arrhythmias and can discuss all the treatment opitions.
