How to stop chronic insomnia?

I am a 42 year old female with chronic insomnia. I have tried everything from melatonin, to lavender oil, to gentle music. I need a good night of sleep, it is affecting my work performance.

Have you tried eliminating all caffeine and all other stimulants? Is your sleep environment dark and quiet? Do you have any other physical symptoms that keep you awake such as having to get up to empty your bladder, or do you have pain or other discomforts that keep you awake? Are you having menopausal symptoms? Menopause can be very disruptive to sleep, so treating those might be useful. I like your attempts at melatonin and lavender use. Prescription sleep meds tend to have more side effect or risk than they have benefit, so don’t be in a hurry to seek out those sources.
