Interventional Radiologist Questions Uterine Fibroids

Is interventional radiology treatment used on uterine fibroids?

I'm 40 years old and I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Is interventional radiology used to treat this?

Yes. These are almost always done by fellowship trained interventional radiologists. Find one with a lot of experience!
Yes.
Uterine artery embolization works very well to get rid of symptoms caused by fibroids.
They can be but it depends on where they are located in the uterus. It usually requires a mri of the pelvis prior to embolization. I am not an interventional radiologist so you should check at your local hospital
It is certainly an option, as is surgical myomectomy or hysterectomy. It all depends on your symptoms and desire for future fertility. This link can help you. It is from the RSNA:

Yes. Sometimes fibroids are treated with embolization of the vascular supply by an interventional radiologist.
Uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE) is a safe outpatient procedure performed by interventional radiologists to embolise the uterine arteries with coils and shrink down the fibroids. Younger women who want to maintain fertility are able to do so with this procedure. The post procedure complications are minimal and the post procedure recovery is much shorter them myomectomy or hyterectomy. A simple pelvic MRI procedure is all that is needed to determine if the patient is a candidate for the UFE procedure or not. Most are candidates. Following tye procedure, there is some pain managed with medicine. The fibroids shrink and disappear rapidly in months following the UFE. This procedure is only offered by interventional radiologists and not by gynecologists.
Yes, most women are a candidate for uterine fibroid embolization. It is an affective minimally invasive procedure for treatment of fibroids. Consult your vascular interventional radiologist to discuss this option to determine if this is the right procedure for your situation.

Sure, Interventional radiologists place a catheter into the artery supplying the uterus and inject small plastic sand like particles which stop the blood supply of the uterus. This basically starves the fibroids and they eventually shrink. This treatment treats the entire uterus just like hysterectomy effectively treating all fibroids and unlike myomectomy which can potentially leave some fibroids behind after the procedure.
Yes, it is. There also are ways to heat the fibroids with focussed ultrasound (HIFU). You should discuss pros and cons with your gynecologist.
Good luck.
Yes, you can do percutaneous embolization.
