Sleep Medicine Specialist Questions Sleep Apnea

Is sleep apnea curable with surgery?

I have been suffering from sleep apnea. Is there a surgery that can help in treating this?

The only cure for obstructive sleep apnea is a tracheostomy. Central sleep apnea and Cheyne stokes breathing disorder will not respond to a tracheostomy since they are related to the central control of breathing during sleep. Tracheostomy bypasses all areas of obstructive apnea from the nose all the way to get air directly into the lungs. Other upper airway surgeries may help, but will not cure sleep apnea.
The answer is sometimes. Cure rates vary greatly depending on the severity of apnea and the anatomy of the patient but overall numbers in the 30%-40% range for the most typical surgeries would be usual. In a very favorable patient with a regimen of sequential surgeries for nonresponders, cure rates can be as high as 90%. That may require as many as 3 separate surgeries or alternatively use of a stimulator for the tongue.
