My father has been having an issue with passing his stools. He said they are hard and he often feels really backed up. Is there a way to treat this with medication?

There is many stool softeners but has to have GI work up and blood work
Bowel regimens tend to be unique to each individual! You could start with 3oz. Prune juice twice daily, with Senokot-S once to twice daily, forever! If loose bowels occur, cut back on the Senokot-S.
Yes, there are several different medications that can be prescribed that help with constipation and hard stools. Make sure your father is drinking plenty of water (unless he has any restriction due to any medical conditions) and add dietary fiber, e.g., eating fruits with skin, green vegetables. I would recommend talking to a doctor and make sure no medically
treatable causes or medications are causing the symptoms.
