Cardiologist Questions Stroke

Are there any risk factors for a stroke?

I am a 40 year old and I have a history of cardiac issues in my family. I have a stressful job, but no bad habits like smoking. Could I also be at a risk of stroke? What are the risk factors associated with a stroke?

In general, the risk factors for heart attack or stroke include: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and family history. There are other rare predispositions but the ones outlined are the most common. Chronic stress may elevate blood pressure and impact sleep as well. It is always a good idea to see your primary doctor once a year to see where you stand.
Hypertension left uncontrolled is a major risk for stroke. Important elements to control hypertension include compliance with medical treatment, restricted sodium consumption, adequate water consumption, exercise, and weight loss. Diabetes mellitus, if present, increases risk of stroke 8-fold.
Heart rhythm abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation are known to increase the risk of stroke particularly in the presence of hypertension diabetes and associated heart disease.
Certain hidden heart defects such as a hole in the heart can increase risk of stroke.
The older the person becomes, the more associated other health issues similar to what mentioned above higher the risk of stroke. That's why certain effective treatments are usually applied to help prevent stroke.
Hi,
At your age, it's low unless there are certain issues. Is there congenital heart disease in your family? Also, do you have heart issues? Finally, any blood disorders that would prematurely cause clots? Other than that, I would say you're low risk; stress causes other issues, but not a stoke unless it significantly elevates your blood pressure. I would get a good history, physical exam, blood tests, ekg, echocardiogram, and go from there, but I would say you're low risk.
Major risk factors include high blood pressure and and abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation. This rhythm is not uncommon in people with high stress levels and with alcohol intake (even in moderation) symptoms include heart palpitations and shortness of breath by can be without symptoms. If you have this rhythm all the time a regular ECG Chan detect that..
Other risk factors include a family history of early stoke, diabetes smoking.
The risk factors include high blood pressure, cardiac abnormal heart rhythm such as atrial fib or flutter, history of previous stroke or heart disease, valvular heart disease, history of rheumatic mitral disease, diabetes , age >75, peripheral vascular disease.
