Pediatrician Questions Piercing

What are the symptoms of a piercing infection?

My daughter just had her ear pierced, and she's 5 years old. But now, she told me that her right ear feels warm and I noticed it looks swollen. Could these be symptoms of an infection?

If it is just a slight swelling without any discharge, it is common skin reaction to piercing. If painful swelling continues especially with discharge, she may need to be treated with antibiotics.
Redness swelling and tenderness at the site are signs of infection. If a pustule forms or fever she would need to be seen. Otherwise try using antibacterial ointment
