Hello I hope you are feeling well. Dry sockets develop soon after tooth extraction within the first 3 or 4 days. It is caused by a poor formation of the blood clot. Only a small percentage of tooth extractions develop dry sockets however when it does develop the pain can be quite severe that will usually not resolve until after it has been treated. The treatment consist of removing the poor developed blood clot in order to create new blood supply and clot to the alveolus.
The clot that is forming comes out of the bone surface and is left without protection. May smell and turn dark and it’s quite painful.
Mild pain that will get worst.
After a tooth is extracted, it can be normal to experience soreness and discomfort for a few days. But if you are experiencing severe pain, swelling, and the extraction site has pus, you may be having a dry socket. This can be treated by your dentist by placing iodoform gauze dipped in eugenol and an antibiotic.
There are no Actual signs preceding dry socket. It will just happen and it will hurt. If it did happen you could visit your dentist to treat it.
Usually there will be pain and smell. The clot that forms in the dry socket is usually a brown, liver color.
There is no beginning sign, dry sockets rarely occur but If it does, it happens 48-72hrs after a lower molar extraction. Usually it’s sudden excruciating pain in an area that felt comfortable and healing.

Pain after about 7 days post extraction
Typically pain/discomfort that starts 2-3 days after the extraction.

If you felt well after the extraction and three days later or so a dull ache develops, that is the beginning sign. The pain will radiate through the jaw if it is a lower (may even do the same for an upper extraction).
That is a great question because it truly has many answers.. Most dry sockets occur when you have a lower extraction. Not to say it doesn't happen on the top, but historically more on the lower. The tooth that was extracted forms a clot and for whatever reason the clot diminishes. Usually the symptoms start between 2-3 days after the extraction and are very painful with a dull ache. The best advice is to follow all the directions from your doctor and understand that it can still happen even if you do...Hope this helps.
