Orthopaedic Surgeon Questions knee pain

What can I do about my knee pain?

I am a 34 year old female with chronic knee pain. What can I do? Should I see a doctor?

I would if it has been more than 3 days of pain, especially if it swells/bruises/aches with prolonged standing or bending. For at home care until you are able to see a chiropractor, I recommend R.I.C.E for your knee as well as stretching. Stay away from heating pads it can cause inflammation.
I would for sure check with your doctor to go over some options. I personally work with knees frequently in the office and I would recommend trying a non-invasive route like that first. PTs can be very helpful as well for a non-invasive treatment option.
Definitely an orthopedic specialist that specializes in knees is probably the best. First the cause of your knee pain needs to be determined prior to making recommendations for treatment. Testing often includes X-rays and often an MRI.
Most knee pain if it is not from some direct injury or a disease process is due to some structural imbalance. With my patients, I begin with a complete examination of the legs from the arches of the feet to the the pelvis and spine. Chronic knee pain can be caused by a muscular imbalance, fallen arches or nerve interference from the low back. These cases usually resolve with adjustments, muscle work, kinesio-taping, acupuncture, or custom orthotics or some combination of these. Try to find a chiropractor who is good at or is a specialist in sports chiropractic. That is your best bet for resolving your issue.

See an orthopedic surgeon to find out why it hurts.
Have an X-ray done.
If it's chronic, then yes, you should see a doctor before getting a massage to make sure you know where it is coming from and that massage is safe.
I would recommend getting an examination from a Sports Chiropractor. Thay have a lot of knowledge and experience with extremity issues, like knee pain. It is also a good idea to get an X-ray series of the painful knee, both knees would be better if possible.
